Hitler Salutes, Insults, Teachers Labeled "Polish Sluts" – When Right-Wing Extremism Shapes a School
March 25, 2025
The recent reports of escalating issues within schools, including racism and right-wing extremism, highlight the urgent need for safer and more inclusive learning environments. Are the physical attacks by a student on a teacher at the Berufsorientierende Oberschule (BOS) in Spremberg, Brandenburg, just the tip of the iceberg? Reports suggest that racist insults, Hitler salutes, and right-wing provocations are commonplace at BOS. Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg spoke with concerned individuals who wish to remain anonymous. Parents, students, and even teachers report a climate of fear.
“A phone call with a parent. The voice nervous, upset. The child, we learn, attends the BOS in Spremberg. ‘The situation at the BOS has been like this for years. There are racist insults, brawls, even teachers are insulted as ‘Polish sluts’. Without anything happening. (…) Parents and students are afraid, we should omit any reference to the identity of our interlocutors.’”
A Deep Dive into the Disturbing Reality
The Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb) reports on the Berufsorientierende Oberschule in Spremberg, Brandenburg, following the physical assault of a teacher by a student. The teacher, born in Russia, was also reportedly subjected to racist insults by the seventh-grader. However, the school administration denies this, stating that "the other students did not hear any derogatory remarks referring to her origin."
However, rbb reports that other accusations point to an unpleasant school atmosphere, even from within the school's staff: One teacher allegedly stands out for his repeated racist remarks. "The colleague refers to students with a migration background as Kanaken," it says. The other teachers are also aware of this, but no one does anything about it.
The Normalization of Extremism
Disturbingly, these incidents are not isolated. Hitler salutes are common among the student body. As the rbb report continues, “Then they all raise their right arms on command and say: Look, there are birds flying up there.” The report adds, “No one wants to give their name, the fear of the allegedly right-wing extremist students is great.” The school administration allegedly ignores the problems – and claims that there is no violence, no racism, no discrimination at the school.
The stories surrounding the BOS are reminiscent of the events two years ago in Burg, less than 50 kilometers away. There, at the secondary school, right-wing extremist students had threatened and intimidated fellow students. In addition, swastikas were repeatedly scribbled throughout the school building, Hitler salutes were given in the classroom, and bullying was directed against the few students with a migration background. The case became public after a letter of complaint from two teachers and made headlines nationwide.
The Need for Proactive Educational Solutions
These alarming reports underscore a critical gap in the current education system: the lack of comprehensive support for students in navigating complex social issues and the absence of truly safe and inclusive learning environments.

The Spremberg Alliance for More Democracy
The Spremberg Alliance “School for More Democracy” consists of committed teachers, social workers, parents, students, local organizations and education experts “who are joining forces to create an inclusive educational environment”. The group wants to promote, in particular, the teaching of democratic values in education.
Their aims and demands in full:
- Training of teachers: It is our concern to train and support teachers comprehensively. In addition to addressing the topic in class, they must be able to respond appropriately to discriminatory incidents and strengthen students affected by racism, sexism and homophobia. This includes compulsory training, democratic guidelines, protection concepts, effective complaint management and reliable cooperation with the police.
- Promotion of school social work: We are committed to ensuring that qualified school social workers are available as contact persons at all schools. Their expertise and prevention skills in dealing with right-wing extremism are of crucial importance in providing students with security and support.
- Teaching democratic values in the classroom: Our focus is on putting democratic values at the center of teaching. Students should learn that diversity is a strength and that every person has the right to shape their lives according to their own ideas. For us, democracy means that all voices are heard and that every human being has equal rights. The transmission of these values is our most important task.
- Showing attitude and taking decisive action: We call on the Ministry of Education, the school authorities and all head teachers to take a clear stand against right-wing extremism and discrimination. Clear intervention in the event of exclusion and violence and the protection of those affected are essential. We are committed to a pedagogical debate with the responsible students and the entire group.
- Sustainable action and sufficient resources: The school board must ensure that schools have sufficient financial and personnel resources to implement preventive measures against racism, sexism and homophobia and to react quickly and appropriately in the event of incidents. Sustainability in our actions is the key to long-term change.
