"WirLernenOnline" Expands Offerings: Free Educational Materials from Kindergarten to Adult Education

March 31, 2025

The digital education platform "WirLernenOnline" is expanding, offering free educational resources for educators and learners from kindergarten through adult education. Originally launched during the Corona pandemic, it continues to provide cost-free materials for the Kita (daycare) setting, classroom lessons, and continuing education. Now, the platform is significantly enhanced with a focus on increased quality.

"WirLernenOnline" (WLO) aggregates freely available educational content from various sources and organizes it into thematic collections, all available at no cost. This includes lesson plans and materials, teaching and learning methods, self-study resources, and training courses. The portal now includes over 280,000 resources. Teachers and learners can search for educational offerings using a search engine or access specific subject portals.

All materials undergo a quality check to ensure they are legally compliant. The educational content on the subject portals also bears the "editorially reviewed" label, indicating that experienced teachers and subject editors have verified the content's quality and accuracy.

"Our goal is to support teachers and learners in finding good and relevant educational content for all educational areas in a time-saving manner. Our focus is particularly on free educational materials, so-called Open Educational Resources (OER)," explains Marco Timm from the association edu-sharing.net, which is responsible for the platform.

Creative Commons licenses support the free development and distribution of OER materials, allowing teachers to adapt content to their needs and then redistribute it. "With WLO, we promote the culture of sharing. OER materials foster exchange and collaboration among teachers: the wheel does not always have to be reinvented!," emphasizes Timm.

Participation Welcome!

"WirLernenOnline" thrives on community engagement. Interested parties can actively participate by suggesting content (including their own materials), adding to and creating topic pages, or contributing to subject-matter editing. The association edu-sharing.net calls on all educational actors to get involved and enrich the platform with their specialist perspectives.

Further information and opportunities for participation can be found at: www.wirlernenonline.de

Study proves effectiveness of digitally supported language promotion already at the beginning of primary school - but...

A study by the Institute for School Development Research (IFS) at TU Dortmund demonstrates the effectiveness of digitally supported language learning for elementary school students. The study, "Speak," showed that a 15-week digital intervention significantly improved vocabulary acquisition compared to traditional teaching methods. Students who received digital support, especially those exposed to additional digital materials at home, gained more new words. While the study highlights the potential of digital tools, it also points out that German elementary schools are under-equipped with digital media compared to other EU countries.

"Even elementary school students have antisemitic images in their heads" - A guide for teachers.

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, students, including those in elementary school, will now learn about antisemitism and National Socialism at a younger age. The Education Minister, Simone Oldenburg, has introduced a guide for teachers in grades 1-6 to educate students about Jewish life, the history of antisemitism, and promote solidarity. This initiative aims to combat rising antisemitic incidents, especially since the Hamas attack on Israel, which have been observed in schools and sports events. The guide, developed with the Anne Frank Center in Berlin, provides teachers with examples, texts, and exercises.
