German Teacher Awards: Recognizing Educators of the Year – “Representing Thousands”

March 31, 2025

What makes an outstanding educator? The German Teacher Awards 2024 made it clear: attitude, passion, and the courage to change. At a ceremony in Berlin, dedicated teachers and school leaders were honored for their innovative approaches and unwavering commitment to making schools true places of learning. Prof. Lin-Klitzing, Federal Chairperson of the German Association of Philologists (co-sponsor of the award along with the Heraeus Education Foundation), emphasized: "This award signifies appreciation – representing thousands of teachers who dedicate themselves to their students every day."

Magnus Osterkamp was beaming. He was standing on the stage of one of Germany's most prestigious halls, in front of an audience of politicians, business leaders, and educational professionals, being honored with the German Teacher Award.

His students nominated him, citing his consistently cheerful attitude, even amidst challenges. Osterkamp himself sees teaching as a privilege: "I constantly remind myself that parents entrust us with the most important thing they have: their children." He also emphasized the positive feedback he receives from students, saying, "It's easier when you're happy yourself. I'm happy to be happy."

Recognizing Innovation and Dedication in Education

The application phase for the "German Teacher Award – Innovative Teaching" 2025 has begun. The German Association of Philologists and the Heraeus Education Foundation seek to recognize teachers, teacher teams, and school leaders of all German school types (including schools abroad). Students in the graduating classes of 2024/2025, teacher teams and colleagues can submit their suggestions or applications until June 30th, 2025 at www.lehrkraeftepreis.de.

Showing a positive attitude despite often inadequate conditions is a key competence of successful educators, whether they're teaching in the classroom or leading a school.

Andrea Franke, who has led the Willy-Brandt School in Berlin's Wedding district for ten years, transformed a struggling school into a learning environment that fosters both students and teachers. Her team managed to halve truancy rates and significantly increase enrollment. "It wasn't me, it was the whole team," says Franke. "There’s a lot of commitment and heart in the pedagogical work. Without connection, no teaching is possible with us."

“The Award Winners Impressively Demonstrate That Strong School Leaders with Vision and Commitment Can Bring About Real Change”

What else is needed? "Courage to make changes," responds the school principal, appealing to teachers across Germany to embrace responsibility. "There is no magic spell to create optimal learning and working conditions. It's about doing. Step-by-step, purposefully, and ready to act. We are a school that wants to develop," Andrea Franke emphasizes. "Our students are true treasures. It's pure joy to teach at this school."

This dedication to innovation and student well-being is truly inspiring. It’s clear that the educators recognized by the German Teacher Awards are going above and beyond to prepare students for the future. But what if every student had access to this level of personalized and forward-thinking education?

Study proves effectiveness of digitally supported language promotion already at the beginning of primary school - but...

A study by the Institute for School Development Research (IFS) at TU Dortmund demonstrates the effectiveness of digitally supported language learning for elementary school students. The study, "Speak," showed that a 15-week digital intervention significantly improved vocabulary acquisition compared to traditional teaching methods. Students who received digital support, especially those exposed to additional digital materials at home, gained more new words. While the study highlights the potential of digital tools, it also points out that German elementary schools are under-equipped with digital media compared to other EU countries.

"Even elementary school students have antisemitic images in their heads" - A guide for teachers.

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, students, including those in elementary school, will now learn about antisemitism and National Socialism at a younger age. The Education Minister, Simone Oldenburg, has introduced a guide for teachers in grades 1-6 to educate students about Jewish life, the history of antisemitism, and promote solidarity. This initiative aims to combat rising antisemitic incidents, especially since the Hamas attack on Israel, which have been observed in schools and sports events. The guide, developed with the Anne Frank Center in Berlin, provides teachers with examples, texts, and exercises.
