Podcast: The Career Orientation Conundrum – Why Young People Feel Lost (And How Schools Can Help)
March 29, 2025
Navigating life after graduation can feel overwhelming. The question "What job, training, or study program suits me?" looms large. With so many options, young people often lack direction. Should schools do more to prepare them for this new chapter? If so, how?
This issue is explored in a recent podcast episode featuring Levi Truong, a young member of the Citizens' Council for Education and Learning, and Ingo Leven, co-author of the Shell Youth Study.
Feeling "Lost" After School
The podcast highlights a common feeling among young people nearing graduation: feeling "lost," unsure of what comes next. Levi Truong, a 22-year-old medical technology student, admits feeling unprepared for the transition from school to university.
"Above all, this independent learning that is required at university is something we never really got to know at school, even though the Gymnasium always claimed to prepare us for our studies. But I didn't feel prepared."
She also feels politically disoriented, a sentiment shared by many young people.
Ingo Leven validates Levi's experiences from a scientific perspective. He explains that young people are often focused on navigating their immediate educational and career paths. Figuring out which political entities represent their interests is a part of this process.
The Fear of Irreversible Career Choices
Another challenge in career selection is the fear of making an irreversible decision. Leven recalls a young person who cynically thanked the system for the "bouquet of possibilities," feeling pressured to choose the "right" flower and fearing that the bouquet would "wilt" if he tried to change his mind later.
Levi Truong found that volunteering and training as a paramedic helped change her perspective. She met people in their 30s and 40s pursuing new careers, proving that detours in professional life are possible.
Bringing Life Into the Classroom
The Shell Youth Study reveals that many young people don't feel like they know where they're going until their mid-twenties. Leven believes that schools have a responsibility to provide young people with the tools to make far-reaching decisions.
Curricula must become more relevant to real-life situations. For example, 90 percent of young people want to learn about "fake news" in school.
“Bringing life into the classroom is central, and career orientation should then take on a much greater importance.”
Levi Truong adds that the curriculum should focus more on students themselves while reducing unnecessary content that leads to excessive hours spent in school.
Reimagining Education: A Call for Innovation
The student also advocates restructuring teacher training programs to make them more attractive.
