Teacher health and well-being are increasingly critical issues in education. Many teachers are facing burnout and leaving the profession early due to high stress levels. However, reliable data on this concerning trend is scarce.

"While student achievement is extensively measured, data on teacher health and well-being are lacking," says VBE Chairman Gerhard Brand.

This lack of data makes it difficult to identify the root causes of teacher burnout and implement effective solutions. An OECD comparative study could help address this issue, but Germany has decided not to participate.

The Growing Crisis

According to a representative survey of school principals conducted by the VBE, 60% reported an increase in long-term sick leave among teachers in the fall of 2023. These absences are related to both physical and psychological illnesses, with the trend significantly increasing compared to previous surveys.

The VBE emphasizes that the shortage of skilled teachers and the resulting pressure on existing staff have serious consequences. However, without proper data collection and analysis, it is challenging to understand these consequences fully and develop effective counter-measures.

Five Key Reasons for Action

The VBE has outlined five key reasons why participating in TALIS (Teaching and Learning International Survey) is essential:

Healthy teachers are essential for healthy schools. Data is needed to improve working conditions.
Other countries are already using TALIS data to develop better solutions. Germany could learn from their experiences and become a role model.
More teachers are needed urgently. Improving working conditions can attract and retain more teachers, reducing sick leave and early retirement.
Appreciation for teachers who work under enormous pressure with increasing challenges and administrative tasks.
Motivated teachers lead to better educational outcomes. Studies show that student performance improves when teachers are motivated.

"The question is not whether Germany can afford TALIS, but whether we can afford to continue to do without it. It is high time to take teacher health seriously!" concludes Brand.

Homework gone! Citizens' Council for Education and Learning hands over recommendations to the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK).

The "Bürgerrat Bildung und Lernen" (Citizens' Council for Education and Learning), initiated by the Montag Stiftung Denkwerkstatt, is advocating for significant changes in the German education system. Composed of over 700 randomly selected citizens, the council proposes abolishing homework and replacing it with in-school practice, increasing student autonomy in learning, and implementing mandatory early language support through a Kita (daycare) obligation.
