Who is lying? School principal accuses former state secretary of defamation ("perfidious strategy")

A school principal in Wiesbaden accuses a former state secretary of defamation and attempted character assassination in connection with her dismissal from her position. The accusation stems from a parent-teacher meeting where the principal claims the former secretary, Lamia Messari-Becker, pressured him to improve her daughter's exam grade. The principal felt pressured by her position and perceived threats. Messari-Becker denies these accusations and claims she is the victim of defamation.

Who's Lying? School Principal Accuses Former State Secretary of Defamation ("Perfide Strategy")

March 28, 2025

WIESBADEN. A school principal speaks of defamation in the committee of inquiry into the dismissal of a Hessian State Secretary. It concerns a parent-teacher conference and a high school grade. The former politician denies everything.

In the affair surrounding the dismissal of a Hessian State Secretary following a conversation at her daughter's Gymnasium (German secondary school), the school principal has accused her of defamation and libel. He said that he felt pressured by her during a parent-teacher conference, testifying as a witness in the Wiesbaden Landtag's committee of inquiry into the dismissal of State Secretary for Economic Affairs, Lamia Messari-Becker.

Her ongoing official complaint against him is a pamphlet, he said, and she is pursuing a "perfide strategy" against him in public. He and colleagues at his school are being accused of false charges in the media: "I'm finding this very difficult."

Minister: "Unacceptable Misconduct"

Hesse's Minister of Economic Affairs, Kaweh Mansoori (SPD), dismissed his non-partisan State Secretary in July 2024, publicly justifying this with "unacceptable misconduct" in her private life, without explaining this criticism. According to a ruling by the Wiesbaden Administrative Court, which is available to the German Press Agency, Mansoori also accuses Messari-Becker of having used her high position to exert pressure for an even better Abitur (high school diploma) grade for one of her daughters in that parent-teacher conference.

Construction physics professor Messari-Becker denies this as false. She, in turn, speaks of defamation. Mansoori's reference to misconduct without public explanation violated his duty of care as her boss. Messari-Becker is defending herself with lawyers against Mansoori and with the official complaint against the school principal.

School Principal Felt Pressured Because of Conversation

The principal, as a witness in the committee of inquiry, reaffirmed that Messari-Becker had openly expressed the expectation of a grade change after her daughter's history exam in the Abitur during the parent-teacher conference – after previously better grades in this subject. Messari-Becker emphasized: "I am a person of public interest and expect an exit door within the scope of what is legally possible." He felt pressured by this – also with regard to possible consequences for him. Messari-Becker vehemently denies having said all of this.

The school principal said: "I deeply regret what Ms. Messari-Becker has experienced." He also reported that the expert in sustainable construction, who comes from Morocco, had accused him of making a reference to her origin – connected with the question of how she got her "great job" here. But he never said that: "That is tantamount to defamation." He is also "represented by a lawyer." Messari-Becker's incorrect accusation that he ultimately twisted the truth in a report about the parent-teacher conference for the Ministry of Culture at Mansoori's insistence is "specifically about libel."

According to Messari-Becker's presentation, the school principal also bypassed the official channels with phone calls to the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Her official complaint against him also mentions violations of the obligation to be heard and the obligation to maintain confidentiality. The school principal said in the committee that the Ministry of Economic Affairs had first contacted him with inquiries.

History Teacher: "Playing Games with Hierarchy" – No Disciplinary Proceedings Against School Principal

The history teacher at the Abitur exam essentially supported the school principal's statements about the parent-teacher conference, where he was also present: Messari-Becker sought an improvement in the grade with reference to an "exit strategy." He experienced "playing games with hierarchy." Two other teachers also testified in a similar manner in the committee.

The CDU faction ruled in a statement: "There is absolutely no reason to doubt the credibility and integrity of the witnesses, especially since there is no discernible reason why the teachers involved should say anything other than the truth."

In circles of the state government, it was said with regard to Messari-Becker's official complaint that no misconduct on the part of the school principal has been identified so far. According to dpa information, there are no disciplinary proceedings. Messari-Becker had already filed her complaint several months ago. By Jens Albes, dpa

Homework gone! Citizens' Council for Education and Learning hands over recommendations to the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK).

The "Bürgerrat Bildung und Lernen" (Citizens' Council for Education and Learning), initiated by the Montag Stiftung Denkwerkstatt, is advocating for significant changes in the German education system. Composed of over 700 randomly selected citizens, the council proposes abolishing homework and replacing it with in-school practice, increasing student autonomy in learning, and implementing mandatory early language support through a Kita (daycare) obligation. They presented these recommendations, along with others such as postponing grades until the 9th grade, to the Minister of Education of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Simone Oldenburg, who currently chairs the KMK (Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs). Oldenburg sees the recommendations as valuable input. The council believes these changes would create a fairer, more relevant, and future-oriented education system, promoting equal opportunities and individual talent development. Other critics point to issues like teacher shortages and dilapidated school buildings as more pressing concerns.
