Students Mobilize: Nearly 55,000 Signatures Against Pop Quizzes Handed Over
MUNICH. Many students in Bavaria dislike them: the dreaded pop quizzes, known as "Exen". But more and more people are calling for new forms of learning assessment. Now, a petition has reached the state parliament.

The young initiators of a petition against unannounced tests and quizzes in Bavarian schools have handed over nearly 55,000 signatures of supporters to the state parliament. "We finally need a modern examination culture," said 17-year-old Amelie from Munich, as she handed the folder to the chairwoman of the Education Committee, Ute Eiling-Hütig (CSU). "There are so many who go to school every day who have panic, who have stress – it simply can't go on like this anymore! And that's exactly why we need a change now!"
Instead of relying on constant fear of unannounced "Exen" or quizzes, the school system must promote enjoyment of learning, according to the supporters. Next, the Education Committee will deal with the demands of the petition in a public session. However, it is questionable whether anything will actually change as a result – after all, Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) already declared the continued existence of the unannounced tests last autumn with a power word.
However, he had drawn a lot of criticism for this, as he thereby nipped in the bud a debate about contemporary forms of examination initiated by Minister of Culture Anna Stolz (FW). The initiators of the petition therefore continue to hope for a realization.
